Representative of Connect International attended an event Future of Democracy – The Impact of AI on Democracy

CONNECT had the privilege of attending the Future of Democracy – The Impact of AI on Democracy foresight workshop, organized by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Brussels. This workshop brought together experts, policymakers, and researchers to explore the complex relationship between artificial intelligence and democratic governance.

Discussions focused on how AI is reshaping democratic processes, from the fragmentation of the public sphere due to algorithm-driven communication to the growing influence of private tech companies over public institutions and policy-relevant data. With AI’s rapid development, concerns were raised about misinformation, declining trust in expertise, and the quality of public debate, all of which impact democratic decision-making. As well as the role of young people and their agency in this transition.

Through structured foresight exercises, we explored emerging issues that could shape the future—both risks and opportunities. Participants worked in groups to assess how these trends might evolve and how policymakers could proactively respond to ensure AI strengthens, rather than undermines, democratic systems.

As AI continues to transform our world, it is crucial to anticipate challenges and collaborate on forward-thinking solutions that uphold democratic values.
