Description for general use
The Before They Hate project is implemented under Erasmus+ Programme, KA220-YOU – Cooperation partnerships in youth and was a two-year initiative dedicated to preventing and raising awareness about hate speech through effective youth work. At its core, the project introduced a unique educational model that combined instructional materials, insightful texts, and interactive activities designed to foster reflective discussions on hate speech, misogyny, racism, and other forms of discrimination. By utilizing youth work methods such as games, conversation starters, and collaborative projects, the initiative aimed to create a safe and inclusive environment where young people could actively engage and take action against hate speech. The project sought to become a reference point for similar initiatives, inspiring both the public and private sectors to take a more active role in hate speech prevention. To achieve this, it developed a Training for Trainers model to equip youth workers with the necessary skills and resources to address hate speech effectively. Additionally, educational materials were designed to help young people understand the impact of hate speech, while practical tools were provided to empower them to create positive change in their communities. Through these efforts, Before They Hate aimed to strengthen youth engagement in combating discrimination and fostering a culture of respect and inclusion. As additional achievements of the project, a short film titled #GELTU was produced within the international framework of Before They Hate, and it won the Audience Award for Best Short Film at the Toronto Film Festival. Furthermore, a photo campaign took place in various countries across Europe, sharing the stories of people who had experienced hate speech—but also stories of optimism and hope in a better world, one with less hate and discrimination, both online and in person. This campaign had a great impact and wide dissemination, reaching not only young people but also broader audiences throughout Europe.
Project Result 1
Evidence-Based Mixed-Method Research on Hate Speech
The project conducted a mixed-method research study focusing on two dimensions of hate speech. The first strand examined the journey of individuals from isolation to active involvement in hate-promoting groups, collecting first-hand data directly from users of these communities. The second strand explored the manifestations and impacts of gender-based violence on young people of foreign descent living in Iceland. The findings were compiled into a comprehensive publication, offering both descriptive insights and practical recommendations for addressing these issues.
Type: Studies / Analysis – Mixed-Method Research and Policy-Oriented Report
Project Result 2

A training model was developed through collaboration among partner organizations, aiming to equip youth workers with the skills and tools to address hate speech in their daily work. The model is rooted in non-formal education principles and includes experiential learning, interactive games, and reflective activities. It builds youth workers’ capacities to understand, respond to, and educate young people about the roots and consequences of hate speech.
Type: Methodologies / Guidelines – Training Model for Trainers
