Project overview
EPITOME explored how Minecraft and game based learning could support problem based learning in higher education. The project equipped educators with digital methods and tools for delivering collaborative, engaging learning experiences beyond the physical classroom.
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected 1.2 billion students, causing schools to shut down in 186 countries and
overall, a widespread educational disruption. Digital tools have become then necessary for both students and
teachers to continue the educational process. Physical classes have been replaced by virtual classes and digital
learning solutions have been put into place. However, not all activities could be replaced by digital-learning
solutions, like, for example, problem-based learning (PBL), which allows students to embrace complexity, find
significance in their learning, and improve their capacity to make inspired contributions to real-world problems.
Teachers need to be educated on how to dispense remote PBL experiences through digital learning methods so
that students can keep benefitting from collaborative problem-solving.
EPITOME was therefore born with the aim of supporting HEI and teachers in providing PBL activities through
digital tools, which were until now offered only through physical collaboration in classrooms. EPITOME aims,
through the blending of PBL and Game-Based Learning solutions, in providing HEI the tools to deliver the same
quality of education they delivered in physical classrooms until now.
Project Results
A multiplayer Minecraft race combining parkour style gameplay with mathematical challenges to help students practise solving linear equations at their own pace.
A Minecraft museum experience presenting simulations of real life experiments through educational activities and mini games.
Tutorial materials were produced to support educators and learners in using the Minecraft based learning environments.
A Minecraft crystallography experience that guides learners from one dimensional to three dimensional crystal structures and uses the game's 3D environment to support understanding.
Learners take on roles based on extinct professions to complete different challenges, combining history learning with a gender equality perspective.
A collaborative role playing mystery in Minecraft: Education Edition where players solve English language clues and work together to find a missing character.
A Minecraft world for learners aged 12 to 14 that simulates buoyancy experiments, presents practical applications and allows learners to compare quiz results before and after gameplay.
An inclusion focused Minecraft world where players identify accessibility barriers in a town and redesign public space so it can be used by people with disabilities.
