The “Hiking4Understanding” project brought together eco camps, youth organizations, sports clubs, and hiking enthusiasts with the aim of fostering intergenerational dialogue and mutual understanding across Europe. The project is implemented under Erasmus+ Programme, Sport Small-scale Partnerships. The project developed innovative hiking-based educational programs and activities that promoted environmental protection and social inclusion. Through a variety of face-to-face and digital actions, members of hiking clubs and youth workers enhanced their capacities in multi-faceted learning by using hiking as a tool for education and engagement. The mission of the project was to inspire people of all ages to incorporate hiking and related activities into their routines—promoting physical activity, practicing digital detox, strengthening intergenerational bonds, and raising awareness about key social issues. The development of Hiking4Understanding methodologies was based on a baseline analysis of partners’ capacities and needs. Partners collaboratively created a set of educational outdoor sport methodologies to trigger intergenerational cooperation in addressing challenges such as environmental sustainability and social inclusion. These methodologies were embedded into the H4U Manual, designed in a step-by-step format to build the long-term capacities of sports clubs, eco camps, and youth organizations beyond the project’s duration. Furthermore, CONNECT led the gamification process of the H4U methodologies. After pilot testing and finalization, the consortium co-developed a compilation of interactive outdoor sport games based on H4U content. These games were tailored for use by informal, intergenerational groups—such as families—offering playful, educational engagement without the need for formal facilitation. The Hiking4Understanding website was developed as a central hub for the project’s outputs, serving as a landing page for further dissemination and promotion of the results. The site contains several sections to ensure that the project’s impact reaches a wider audience, supporting long-term access to the educational materials, methodologies, and resources developed throughout the initiative.

H4U Online Capacity Building Manual & Methodologies
The project developed a comprehensive online manual accompanied by cross-sectoral methodologies tailored for hiking clubs, eco camps, and youth organizations across Europe. The manual offers structured guidance on implementing intergenerational hiking-based activities and ensures long-term applicability through its practical design and transnational relevance.

H4U Social Games
Based on the H4U methodologies, a set of interactive social games was created to promote intergenerational sports and learning among families and informal community groups. Available online and free of charge, the games offer a fun and engaging way to practice solidarity and physical activity beyond formal structures. A dedicated section on the H4U website allows users to propose new games, ensuring continuous evolution and expansion.
